It may have been in the wilds of Bedfordshire (if that gentle county can be fairly accused of having any wilds), but that did not deter a goodly throng of friends from climbing into the coach organised by Dudley Elsmore on 31st October, and arriving just in time in Clophill for what was grandly described as The Collation of the Reverend Dean Henley as Rector of the Benefice of Campton, Clophill and Haynes in the diocese of St Alban’s by the Bishop of Bedford.
The church of St Mary the Virgin was packed, and the three dozen or so of us formed a noticeable group in the welcoming crowd. All our clergy were there: John Page, John Evans, John Innes and Jennifer Paterson, processing in and out with many others. The service was an impressive one; there was a first-rate address by the Bishop, and even a fanfare of trumpets. In due time, Dean was taken to his stall, gave out the parish notices, and we all adjourned to the nearby school for refreshments.
We were late home after a journey that was not without incident, but everyone was glad to have been at such an occasion and to have had the opportunity to wish Dean well in his new parish.
Friends in the parish who may wish to write to Dean will need his new address. Here it is:
Rev. Dean Henley, Rector of Campton, Clophill and Haynes, The Rectory, North Lane, Haynes, Bedfordshire MK45 3PW
